2nd Annual VOBA Puppy Hunt (Puppy / Old Timer Shoot Out)
On May 22nd, the Virginia Outside Beagle Association held its 2nd annual Puppy Hunt. This year instead of making it a derby/puppy hunt…they changed it up a little and made it a 3 hour puppy/old timer hunt. The puppies had to be under 13 months old and the Old Timers had to be over 6 years old. Heat on the Meat Kennels was fortunate enough to take home some trophies as well as a little cash from the Calcutta. Magic the Natural (12 months old) has been consistent since she was 6 months old at her first trial. She found her way into 3rd place out of 90 puppies and only missed 2nd place and the second place Calcutta money by 5 points! Billy also had his 9 month old male, Cooter Brown, place 17th and Tyler had his male, Superduty, place 18th out of the 90 puppies entered. While Mitch didn’t place any puppies, he did find his way into 4th place in the Old Timer division with our stud male, Back 40 Bo Cephus, and also placed him 4th in the bench show that day. Overall, the day was a huge success and delicious food was provided by Billy Gray and friends. We are all looking forward to next years puppy hunt and will hopefully find some similar success once again.

1st North Carolina Fox Beagle Association Hunt –
Fox Run Coyote Preserve- Elizabeth City, NC
On May 1st, 2010 the North Carolina Fox Beagle Association hosted its first hunt at Fox Run Coyote Preserve in Elizabeth City, NC. The pen was full of yotes, but with dry conditions, heavy winds, and warmer than average temperatures…the running was tough. Heat on the Meat Kennels managed to do exceptionally well in the female class though that day, taking home 4 of the 10 trophies on that particular morning. With 99 dogs pounding the bushes for 4 hours, it not only took speed, but a dog with one heck of a nose to hold the front. Unfortunately, we were not able to place any males in the top 10, but had quite a few that scored well enough to make it into the top 20. The hunt was followed by an amazing cookout sponsored by Billy Gray and his family and a great time was had by all. The NCBA will resume its trial schedule in the fall and you can bet we will be there gunning for the clock!

1st Virginia Fox Beagle Association Field Trial
This past weekend, the Virginia Fox Beagle Association had its very first trial at Stony Creek Fox Pen in Sussex, VA. The pen is one of the most well stocked pens in the state and with the 125 dogs running wall to wall for 4 straight hours, the foxes were forced to touch every corner of the 280+ acres. Not only was the cast one of the most exciting of the year, but the consistent four hours of running gave everyone watching at the fence some good action and allowed for PLENTY of friendly trash talking. Luckily, Heat on the Meat didn't have to swallow their words come trophy time and was able to put 2 females and 1 male in the top ten. We were also fortunate enough to get the breakdown of how the other dogs that we brought did and were pleasantly surprised with what we saw. Here is the breakdown - Dixie placed 6th in the Female Class, Billy's 10 month old puppy Magic placed 9th on the female side, and Kita placed 13th. On the male side, Billy's 16 month old Derby dog Micky J proved he can do it on the inside AND on the outside by placing 8th in the Male Class, Powder (his brother) placed 12th, Mitch's Perkins placed 14th and Micky J's other brother (Bo Dacious) placed 16th. All and all the hunt went excellent with a good raffle, great food, and some insane running on fox. We look forward to the first North Carolina Fox Beagle Association hunt on May 1st at Fox Run. |

Field Trial VOBA 3/06/2010 Indian Oaks/Land Owners Hunt Clubs
The trial this past weekend (March 6th, 2010) at Indian Oaks/Landowners HC in Crewe, VA was one for the record books. With over 75 judges and acres upon acres of rolling land, the scoring reached an all time high for our Association’s hunts. It took an impressive 190 points just to get a dog in the top 30, and 465 points to win! Heat on the Meat Kennels had another successful weekend, qualifying two more dogs just in time for the championship. Billy placed his year and a half old female Niki at 24th place for the first time this season and Mitch placed Timber at 16th place, making for a grand total of 10 Heat on the Meat dogs qualified for the 2010 championship. Unfortunately the two dogs in the top 10, Kita and Micky J did not place and fell back to 13th and 7th respectively in the overall points. With points counting this year though in the championship hunt, much can change after it all shakes out this upcoming Saturday. We are excited and hopeful for a great finish to the trial season this upcoming weekend at Spring Creek Hunt Club. See everyone bright and early Saturday.

Field Trial VOBA 2/20/2010 Last Chance Hunt Club
![]() | The trial on February 20th, 2010 at Last Chance Hunt Club was accompanied by gorgeous weather, delicious chicken wings, and some more continued success for Heat on the Meat Kennels. Tyler only had one more dog to get qualified for the championship (Mad Man – dog # 110), and he finally found his way into the trophies by placing 28th out of a field of 170 dogs. Billy found continued success with Kita by placing her 8th this past weekend. She has now placed in every trial in 2010 and has come very close to winning a couple times here lately. Her big day is bound to be around the corner. Her 8th place finish this past weekend propelled her into 7th place in the overall point series. Micky J, who hasn’t placed in the last two hunts, still remains at 5th place in the overall points and has 2 more hunts to seal his fate in this 2010 trial season. We are anticipating some good things out of him, Kita, and many others in the upcoming months once these pen hunts start and the luck factor involved with the outside hunts subsides. We are also looking forward to running a little closer to home (make that a LOT closer to home) in two weeks at Indian Oaks/Landowners hunt club in Crewe, VA. See everyone there! |

Field Trial VOBA 2/13/2010 Callaville Hunt Club
The field trial on February 13th, 2010 at Callaville Hunt Club was a trial full of highs and lows for Heat on the Meat Kennels. With Billy having his puppy Micky J sitting in first place in the series, anticipations ran high to see if he could keep up the good luck. Unfortunately, Micky J’s luck did run out and he wound up not getting scored at all, dropping him back to 4th place in the points with 3 hunts left to go this year. One of the greatest highlights though came as a surprise to everyone. Billy’s nine month old puppy, Magic the Natural, found a way to run with the big dogs and make her way into the trophy’s, placing 21st at only her 3rd field trial ever. We knew she was doing well, but for a dog that isn’t even fully developed yet to be keeping up with some of the top dogs in the state, was quite impressive in our opinion. Billy also placed Kita again, but at an unimpressive 30th place. Her consistency was proven once again, but she actually fell back to 17th place in the overall points with her 30th place finish. Mitch had some good luck this weekend as well, placing his dog Sexton in 24th place. This was her second time placing this season. We are looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend at Last Chance hunt club for a great hunt with hopefully some great weather. And, after getting our butts whooped by Twin Rivers Kennels this past weekend in the points race, we are going to hopefully find some luck again and make our way back into the big plastic trophies! See everyone Saturday! |

Field Trial VOBA 1/23/2010 Courthouse Hunt Club
The field trial on January 23rd, 2010 at Courthouse Hunt Club was not only a great time, but ended up being another huge success for Heat On The Meat Kennels. Mitch qualified another dog for the Championship (Sexton – dog # 66) by placing her 30th out of a field of 195 dogs. He now has 2 of his 7 qualified for the March 13th Championship at Spring Creek HC. Tyler found his way into the trophies this week (and finally broke the ice) by winning his first trophy ever with G-Spot (dog # 90) in 28th place. Billy had yet another great Saturday by placing Kita 25th and Micky J in 3rd place for the second week in a row. Kita has been very consistent again this year and will hopefully have her big day here soon. Micky J’s 3rd place finish this weekend was enough to propel him into 1st place in the VOBA points chase with a healthy 11 point lead over the rest of the field. Kita sits at 16th place with 3 hunts left in the points series before the championship. Also noted from this weekend should be the 5 other dogs (Magic – 8 months old, Niki, Perkins, Mad Man, and Dixie) that we had within 10 points of getting into the trophies. We are looking forward to yet another great trial in two weeks at Callaville HC. See yall then!

Field Trial VOBA 1/16/2010 Cato Hill Hunt Club
The trial on Jan. 16th, 2010 at Cato Hill Hunt Club was a huge success for Heat On The Meat Kennels with four top 20 finishes out of a field of over 200+ dogs. Mitch placed Rotella (dog # 077) 20th, and Billy placed B.J. (dog # 62) 13th place, Kita (dog # 50) 8th place, and his 1 year 4 month old puppy Micky J (dog # 40) 3rd place with 270 points! Micky J is now sitting 5th place in overall points for the series with only 3 hunts left to go till the championship. Our kennel was also very close to having the best combination pack for the day, finishing second by a slim margin. A great time was had by all and we can't wait to reconveign with everyone at Courthouse Hunt Club this upcoming weekend. We hope you enjoy the pics and the video from the cast site last weekend.
